Usages of Battery Acid/Sulfuric Acid
The main use of sulfuric acid is to make phosphoric acid which is used in the production of fertilizer. The other common uses of sulfuric acid is metal processing, batteries, pulp/paper, agricultural potato growing, paint/pigments, and others. It is used in the metal processing for the manufacture of copper and zinc and in cleaning the surface of steel sheet (pickling). It can be used to make caprolactam which can be converted into the manufacture of poly-amide 6 and titanium dioxide. These are used in the making of pigments. Sulfuric acid is important to industries because many of these industries use hydroelectric acid and phenol with propane which is manufactured using sulfuric acid. It is also used for the electrolytes in car batteries to power the cars. Sulfuric acid is commonly used and is important to our economy.
List of uses:
-Fertilizers -Drugs
-Metal processing -Explosives
-Chemicals and pigments -Fibers
-Pulp and paper
-Hydroelectric acid
-Others (batteries, potato growing,
water treatment, mining,etc.)
Safety
Sulfuric acid is a very dangerous substance to handle. It is very reactive with water that generates lots of heat and can cause combustible substances to explode. It is HIGHLY corrosive and should be handled with safety equipment. If a explosion or fire happens make sure water and sulfuric acid does not come in contact.
MSDS of Sulfuric Acid:
ICSC 0362 - SULFURIC ACID. (n.d.). Retrieved March 04, 2015, from http://www.ilo.org/dyn/icsc/showcard.display?p_lang=en&p_card_id=0362
Symptoms
Hazards:
Fire: It is not combustible but many reactions may cause fire or an explosion. The symptoms are irritating or toxic fumes(gases) in a fire.
Explosion: There is a risk of fire and explosion on contact with the bases, combustible substances, and oxidizing agents. The symptoms are the reduction of water and agents.
Exposure:
Inhalation: The symptoms are burning sensations, sore throat, coughing, weak breathing, and shortness of breath. These symptoms may be delayed.
Skin: The symptoms are redness, pain, blisters, and serious skin burns on the skin.
Eyes: The symptoms are redness, pain, and severe deep burns on the eyes.
Ingestion: The symptoms are abdominal pain, burning sensation, and shocks or collapses.
Prevention
There are many ways to prevent these symptoms and hazards. Make sure the substance is not in contact with flammables and combustible substances to make sure no explosions occur. Prevent the generation of mist so you can avoid all contact on body parts. Use proper ventilation, local exhaust or breathing protection. Wear safety equipment like protective gloves, clothing, face shields, safety goggles and/or with breathing protection. Make sure to not eat, drink, or smoke during the usage of Sulfuric Acid.
First Aid
To properly care for yourself and others in case of fires make sure there is no contact with fire with the substance and use proper extinguishing methods. For first aiding, consult your doctor in all cases. Make sure to have fresh air once in a while and rest. If using safety equipment, properly remove the contaminated clothes and rinse with plenty of water. Shower if needed. Rinse eyes for several minutes and remove contact lens (If wearing). Make sure to rinse the mouth and not to not induce vomiting.
There is no specific safe quantities to use but do not overuse substance.
